Why should you choose me as your web designer?

It’s a totally legitimate question! With all the choices out there, why me? So this blog is intended to be an overview of my current skillset and the pros and cons of choosing me as your designer.

Skillset

If the internet is a series of tubes, then a web designer is just the painter for the faucet, right? Well, no. Bad George Bush-esque analogies aside, a web designer can wear a few different hats. The percentages are an estimate of how much time I put into each facet of my job proportionate to an entire project.

Web Design

Web design is, of course, the bulk of what I do for my design clients. Nearly all of my design work is done using the WordPress CMS platform, which is used by sites such as CNN, eBay, etc. Click here to see some of the top sites built on WordPress. I also manipulate or add typography to the odd photo or graphic on occasion.

Many people know that with WordPress you often start with a theme, but what some may not realize is that the flagship themes of some design companies are ones that basically have you building a site from scratch. Additionally, there are several great page builders out there that are made to work with just about any theme.

The back-end, technical stuff is important, too. Some of the things I can help with are:

  • domain name purchases
  • web hosting setup and WordPress install
  • SSL certificates
  • maintaining your WordPress installation and plugin updates

My clients also have the option of hosting their websites on one of my own hosting plans, giving them the convenience of buying hosting and design work from the same company.

SEO & Marketing

—03—

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the art of coaxing your website higher in Google’s search results. It is an entire industry unto itself. There are plenty of people out there who know way more than I do about both SEO and other forms of online marketing.

Depending on how deep you need to dive, however, I may know enough for your needs. Before I left my last eight to five job I was able to get their website on the first page for most of the keywords that I targeted. Since then I have continued to do occasional research into SEO and online marketing technique, and have put what I have learned into practice here and there.

Yes, you read that right: client communication. Great communication is essential to learning what my client’s needs are, and I try to communicate as often as I need to using in-person meetings, phone calls, emails, screen-sharing sessions, etc.

You may have noticed that this one puts me over 100%. That’s because it takes so much more time than it looks like at first glance. From pre-sales conversations to the follow-up, much of the time spent communicating is probably not factored into what I am paid, though it probably should be.

Pros and Cons

Some other considerations if you are thinking about hiring me.

Pros

  • Convenience Hosting and web design in one.
  • Equipped I have the tools to build a beautiful, modern website.
  • Price Compared to well-established designers I will likely be lower.
  • Local If you are near me we can do face-to-face meetings.

Cons

  • Experience I have not had the opportunity to build many sites, yet (so I will be eager to please).
  • Coding If much complex code is needed it would have to be outsourced (because I am focused on design).
